I haven't read the article, & have no desire to do so, but one of the Gabsters did & said that it is basically more of the same, the self-hating, apologetic "I am fat & worthless but my love insurance does not cover WLS" moaning that so many people do. I am sure that she does love love her children, but she doesn't sound as if she loves herself much, & she certainly love does not sound as if she promotes diversity-acceptance in her children. Posted by jportnick on September 20, 2003 09:59 AM. fat black girl good article and good picture. the author covered it all. i was saddened by the comments by her children. i fat black girl felt maybe kids could, if challenged, challenge their own assumptions about the desirability, for instance, of a fat baby, or a big bustline, or of what the different mommies looked like. even when my kids were as young as fat black girl 4 and 6 i was working with them to look at people's differences with respect. i am not criticizing the author. she is obviously a loving mother. but i've found kids quite responsive, even after they make clueless comments, to the effects those comments have. my kids seemed to get it early about fat people, about gay people, etc. i think maybe it's easy to not expect much of kids? they are kids, after all... so they model whatever predjudices they see in their surrounding culture.
