uk, breathlessness, brian stewart, atkinsdiet, food education society, the diabetic diet, eating healthy, fat burning food, fat man walking, virginia, uk chat, franklinbicknell, low carb recipes, friendships, weight, teachers, drama, high schools, | All of this makes any attempt by studies to correlate weight or BMI and health or risk of dying seem pretty silly to me -- whether it is something that appears to support our position about weight and health or not. Posted by jmars on February 18, 2006 10:05 AM. family " a study that found that having a high BMI was essentially a non-factor in determining causes of death." I don't think that's an accurate conclusion. More like, "a study found that having a high BMI family does not increase family the risk of death within the next 4 years for persons over the age of 50." The study did not determine cause of death, nor it did deem BMI a "non-factor." Quite the opposite in fact; of the 41 factors studied, all were determined to be significant predictors of mortality within the next 4 years. Of those 41, 12 were found to be the most accurate predictors. Regardless of the statistical methods used to narrow down the factors, BMI remained among the final 12. |

Did the study take into account the impact of disease on weight? Given that people with many serious illnesses (like cancer) end up losing a lot of weight, if the study didn't take those illnesses into account, you might see this result. In other words, it may be that those with BMIs under 25 had illnesses that caused their weight to be at that level. So they brian stewart don't have a higher death rate because they're "thin," they're thin because they have illnesses that ultimately lead to their deaths. And remember when Dr. Atkins died and some people went on and on about how fat he was when he died, and that it turned out that his kidneys had failed and he was retaining fluid in his system. He wasn't "obese" because of his diet; his body weight had been elevated by the treatment he was receiving for his injuries. |
