Bodies come in different sizes, some are "lean and toned" and some are not. To tell the truth, I don't believe that average American is significantly any fatter. I know that is a controversial thing to say but I study Art fat belly History and most recently I've been studying the work of Artemesia (and Orazio) Gentileschi and her paintings (17th century) depict a population almost entirely made up of fatter people. And she did not paint rich men and women (who it is fabled were more likely to be fat, because rich people can afford more food, so I'm told, since the opposite is true today), she painted washerwowen who did strenuous labor all day and did not have "huge portions", she painted the working class. And they were fat. She herself struggled to support herself and her daughter and barely had enough food and she was fat, also.
