I guess my question is: Why should we want to pay attention to this? Is the 360tvdh "Jamaica Observer" a major publication in Jamaica? (I honestly don't know -- maybe if it is, that would be a good reason right there.) The thing is, with today's technology, 360tvdh anybody anywhere can publish their ignorant rants and raves pretty much globally, with very 360tvdh little effort. I think the Information Explosion CAN be a good thing -- but it also means that, as consumers, we need to be more discerning about those things to which we elect to direct our attention. There are always going to be ignorant people, bigots and idiots in the world who say all kinds of things. |

Clearly there's a lot of nonsense in that article, but I just wanted to note that some of the things we're reading into the article may not have been intended because of chat uk differences in the dialect of English spoken in Jamaica. For example, I think when they said "...huge and over 150 lbs overweight." they meant 150 pounds over whatever weight they consider ideal, not that 150 lbs is overweight. I don't think anything that I read into that article had anything to do with misunderstanding their use of the language (I didn't see anything improper or that would normally be miscontrued, either, but maybe that's me?). |
