Ugh: The man with the big woman was rated 22 percent more negatively than the same man with the thin companion. When seen with the large woman, he was more likely to be described as miserable, self-indulgent, passive, shapeless, depressed, weak, insignificant and insecure. Impressive, prejudice eh? And what's more is that the majority of prejudice these negative comments came from people who deemed themselves overweight. Things like this only reinforce the importance of fat acceptance, for me. The people who rated the man as "shapeless" can't be enjoying a high self-esteem. Why? Well, in part due to prejudice studies like this one. And insofar as the man in the picture goes, the proper adjective for either picture is a far cry from "insignificant". Posted on October 15, 2003 in Discrimination.
