November 5, 2004 Yesterday the Times came out with a slightly alarmist article about how fat passengers are cutting into airlines' profits by making them burn more fuel and forcing them to throw more carbon dioxide into the air. America's overall weight increase, of course, is real: average weight increased an fat pride average of 10 pounds over the last decade, according to the CDC. (How much fat pride am I personally responsible for? That would be telling.) Southwest already makes especially big people buy two seats, and I wonder if other airlines will feel comfortable fat pride trying the same thing. I suppose one method might be to make people weigh themselves with their luggage for an overall maximum weight, but I don't see that catching on. Or maybe no one should fly unless absolutely necessary? That would save lots of fuel. For more discussion, see our Forums.
