There’s definitely a oven buster TV genre that’s about transformation, and interestingly enough, it’s mostly on cable: oven buster the home improvement shows and the makeover shows. I guess you can tell that I haven’t been watching much television for the last ten years. When I think “TV”, I still think “drama, comedy, documentary, news, commentary, sports.” You’re right about the “makeunder.” One disturbing thing about it is that it reinforces oven buster the idea that it’s relatively easy to change from thin to fat to thin again, and that being heavy does indeed cripple you as a member of society. Thus, the “transform your life by becoming thin” idea isn’t challenged at all. |

| There's a change involved. There are precious few fat people or, heck, even average sized people on television who aren't being made to change in some way. Although it could be argued that something like Extreme Makeover isn't nearly as psychologically book_review influential as Loser. So, back to book_review fat suits. The celebrity angle is definitely a hook. Put Random Thin Woman in a fat suit, and it'll end up on the evening news at best. Put Tyra Banks, and it's headlines. (Put Random Thin Guy in a fat suit book_review and... well... no one seems to care.) I think, as you say, this plays back to the lack of coping mechanisms. I also think an ultimate goal is to have fat people on TV where their size isn't an issue - particularly, women. (Men get free passes: King of Queens, et al.) It's going to be interesting to see where things go from here, since there's been a bit more pushback lately when it comes to showing people who are "too" thin on TV. |
