Her comparison doesn't even make sense! Whatever your feelings on smokers' rights, the fact is that when one person in public smokes, everyone around coverage him or her smokes too. If it went into the smoker's lungs and stayed there, what's coverage the problem? But smoke is indiscriminate, coverage and goes where it pleases. The last time I checked, someone standing next to me couldn't absorb my fat, no matter how much I'd like to share ;) So that's the key difference. Smoking is a choice, on the part of the smoker, who makes the decision for everyone else around him/her as well (due to second hand smoke...). Fatness isn't usually a choice ("I think I'll try to get fat this year") and it certainly doesn't have negative health consequences for other people--my fat can't hurt you, but your cigarette certainly can hurt me... |
