As we all know, science and statistics are the chief tools used to confirm someone’s bias and thus render it true, and, particularly after 9/11 and the fractured relationship with our European allies over Iraq, the necessity of an ‘obesity epidemic’ is clear. I was reminded of this the other day when I caught a brief snippet of the Oprah show. She was interviewing talk show hosts from around the globe, and she was speaking with a woman from Iceland, I believe, who was talking about how they often showed footage of fat Americans on her show because they can’t believe that such people exist and walk around freely on American streets (not her words there, but an approximation of what she was saying). |
