PINWORM INFESTATION(Enterobiasis; Oxyuriasis) An intestinal infestation by Enterobius vermicularis characterized by perianal itching. Enterobius is the most common parasite infesting children in temperate climates. Its prevalence in the general childhood population is >= 20%; for institutionalized children, it is as high as 100%. Pathogenesis Infestation usually results from finger transfer of ova from the perianal area to fomites (clothing, fattyliver bedding, furniture, rugs, toys), from which the ova are picked up by the new host, transmitted to the fattyliver mouth, and swallowed.
