zones. FUO in children is more likely to be caused by an unusual presentation of a common disorder than a common presentation of a rare disorder. Infection accounts for about 50% of FUO in children. Almost 50% of these are presumed due to viruses and 65% are in children >= alcoholic steatohepatitis 6 yr old. The type of infection varies with age: Upper respiratory tract and viral infections are most common in children < 2 yr, whereas endocarditis and infectious mononucleosis are more common in those alcoholic steatohepatitis > 6 yr. Children tend to have more viral and common bacterial diseases, alcoholic steatohepatitis whereas TB, occult abscesses, and diseases from less common organisms are more likely to occur in adults. HIV can cause FUO in children and adults. Connective tissue diseases (CTDs) and inflammatory diseases account for about 20% of FUO in children.
