Cirrhosis is sometimes associated with an excess of iron in fat fatty the liver. This is very much a ‘chicken and egg’ fat fatty situation because inherited disorders of iron metabolism, such as haemochromatosis, can cause cirrhosis and a damaged liver can lose the ability to properly metabolise dietary iron. So, careful diagnosis is necessary. Excessive liver iron fat fatty can also be a factor in the development of diabetes. Less than optimal liver function increases sensitivity to prescription drugs and these need to be carefully monitored when fibrosis is extensive and the liver is losing its ability to fully metabolise them. Cirrhosis is a risk factor for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer).
