In fact, early cirrhosis is known as ‘compensated’ open access and may go on for many years, particularly when a healthy diet and lifestyle are factored in. Many people diagnosed with cirrhosis never advance beyond the ‘compensated’ phase. The spleen may enlarge as blood backs up. Blood vessels around the liver must take over from those no longer accessible vessels open access within it. This process puts them under pressure so that they become distended, open access and are called ‘varices’. They may bleed into the stomach and oesophagus with red blood exiting via the mouth or nose and either red or black (semi-digested) blood, via the bowel.
