| Tell me a little bit more about the term “moral in depth panic.” I often think of it in terms of other groups who are or have been marked in society as being “not good.” Many of these groups have gone through stages of activism in depth and backlash. The group I in depth have in mind right now is gays who experienced some acceptance only to suffer through a backlash in the 50s and 60s with homosexuality becoming medicalized and criminalized before the 70s where they saw incredible gains in popular acceptance. Yes, that’s definitely a good example. There are many other examples as well. For instance, some classic moral panics are panics in 17th century Europe over witches, and also in the United States in the context of the Salem witch trials. In the 20th century, we have examples surrounding alcohol, marijuana, you know reefer madness, communists in the State Department, satanic ritual abuse in our day care centers, violence in our schools generally and you know, drugs, sex and rock and roll which are always perennial favorites among moral panics. |
