So one of the reasons I wrote this book, as a law professor and as a scholar with legal training, people is to emphasize that there are some very distorting sorts of factors that are making something, which in many ways people is not really a medical issue at all, be discussed exclusively within a medical people discourse as opposed to being discussed as a political issue, which is, I believe the way that it primarily should be addressed. What kinds of legal issues do you see around this topic? The first thing I can think about is discrimination and the fact that fat people are not regarded as full citizens in our society. Right. Weight discrimination is pervasive and invidious in our society. It’s an irrational form of discrimination and like any other form of irrational discrimination, it’s something that is very disturbing in terms of our legal culture which is, as a whole, committed to the notion that people should not be discriminated against unless there is some good reason for discriminating against them.
