No wonder we’re looking for a miracle pill. Remember fen-phen? Wyeth-Ayerst trumpeted diabetes control Redux (the brand name for fenfluramine-phentermine), only to yank it off the market in 1997 after 45,000 women developed fatal primary pulmonary hypertension or heart valve damage. More than six million women were prescribed the drug. Fat activists question diabetes control the drug’s approval in the first place, and why fat people who had no diabetes control health problems were prescribed a drug that chewed up their hearts or suffocated them. Currently, two weight-loss drugs – Xenical and Meridia – are being tested for safety and effectiveness in kids ages 12 to 16. Abbott Laboratories, the company that makes Meridia, said that the most common side effects are “headache, dry mouth, anorexia, constipation and insomnia” and mentioned that since Meridia contains a controlled substance (sibutramine), abuse may lead to dependency.
