In covering this story, I was match surprised by the large number of DUI's where the problem isn't alcohol but drugs (both prescription and illegal). According to the State Toxicologist there were only 309 drug-related DUI arrests in 1995. Last year, there were 3119. A couple of cases, in which the drivers had taken Ambien, were truly weird. For example, police stopped a 52-year-old woman for driving erratically on the freeway. She was wearing only her underwear and a shirt. |
