The main health consequence of the disease is fracture since osteoporotic bone breaks more easily. Some 1.3 million osteoporotic fractures occur every year in the USA alone. Hip fracture is the cause of much of the mortality and morbidity due to osteoporosis; between 12% and 20% of patients with hip peru fracture die within one year. Some peru studies peru have detected a link between bone mass and hormonal contraceptive use, while others have failed to do so. To further evaluate the effect of the use of hormonal contraceptives on bone mass, the Programme is sponsoring a study on bone mass in women aged 30-34 years in a variety of locations. The study is being conducted in Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Egypt, Mexico, Thailand and Zimbabwe. Each centre is enrolling women who are free of conditions known to affect bone mass and who have used selected hormonal contraceptives (combined oral contraceptives, DMPA, Norplant) for at least two years during their lifetime. The women's bone mass values will be compared with those of a control group who have had no, or less than six months', exposure to hormonal contraception.
