According to Scottish Census data in 2001, 2% of cohabiting couples in Scotland were of the same sex. These couples were recorded as 'ungrouped' individuals in previous censuses, but identified as couples in the 2001 census. Increasing numbers of children are being born and raised in cohabiting families. For many people, cohabitation and parenting now go hand in hand.
